Dr. Ing. Lothar Wessolly has passed away
Lothar Wessolly passed away on February 8, 2026, after a short, serious illness. With him, we lose far more than a colleague – we lose a friend, mentor, and long-standing companion. In his field, Wessolly was truly unique.
With exceptional knowledge, analytical acuity, and great passion, he set new standards. In 1986 – now 40 years ago – he founded the scientific discipline of tree statics. He not only established this field but decisively shaped and developed it with foresight, perseverance, and scientific depth. Through his work, the assessment of the stability and fracture resistance of trees was given a sound scientific foundation that is recognized nationally and internationally to this day and will endure beyond his own lifetime.
Beyond this, Wessolly was the developer of significant products for tree planting and tree care. His commitment to trees, to their safety and preservation, was tireless. What he accomplished for this field and for the practical handling of trees can hardly be put into words.
He conveyed not only professional expertise but also an attitude: respect for the tree as a living being, scientific curiosity, and the courage to explore new paths. Many of us associate him with formative conversations, collaborative projects, and inspiring moments that allowed us to grow both professionally and personally.
We will deeply miss his advice, his persuasive power, and his unique personality. His work and his ideas, however, will live on.
